Overview

Three days is the sweet spot for most travellers. You ride every highlight of the northern loop — the Heaven Gate, the Dong Van Karst Plateau and the Ma Pi Leng Pass — and still have time to slow down in the rice-terraced valley of Du Gia.

Choose self-drive if you are an experienced rider, hop on the back with one of our easy riders, or relax in an open-top Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Itinerary

  1. Day 0 · Travel day

    Arrive in Ha Giang

    Take a day or night bus from Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa or Cat Ba. Your dorm bed at Loop Trails Hostel is included and the tour starts at 08:00 the next morning.

  2. Day 1 · Tour starts

    Ha Giang → Quan Ba → Dong Van

    About 130 km over Bac Sum Pass and the Heaven Gate, past the Twin Mountains and Lung Tam linen village, then up Tham Ma Pass onto the karst plateau. Homestay night in Dong Van.

  3. Day 2

    Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Du Gia

    About 100 km. Walk the Ma Pi Leng skywalk above the Tu San Canyon, ride the M-Pass and Sa Ly Pass, then descend into the quiet valley of Du Gia.

  4. Day 3

    Du Gia → Duong Thuong → Ha Giang

    About 90 km. Morning swim at Du Gia waterfall, viewpoints over Duong Thuong valley and a forest road along the Mien River. Back at the hostel around 16:00.
